Pancreatin enzyme is derived from the pancreatic glands of swine or bovine sources. Its key ingredients consist of trypsin, amylase, and lipase, supplemented by trace amounts of chymotrypsin and elastase. Trypsin decomposes proteins into amino acids and small peptide chains, amylase breaks down starch into carbohydrate compounds, and lipase aids in the decomposition of fats into glycerol and fatty acids. These components synergize to enhance the absorption of nutrients within the intestinal tract.
Medical applications: It is mainly indicated for the treatment of conditions associated with pancreatic insufficiency, including chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and pancreatic carcinoma—all of which result in inadequate secretion of pancreatic enzymes. The preparation relieves manifestations like dyspepsia, steatorrhea, and unintended weight loss. Usual dosage forms include enteric-coated tablets or capsules, which are administered with meals to preserve enzymatic activity in the intestines.
